A deck you can cross in bare feet
The pool is the reason a lot of people buy a house out here, and the concrete around it takes the worst of the weather. Summer runs past 110 degrees, the sun is hard on everything it touches, and a bare slab turns chalky, stained and hot enough that nobody wants to cross it without shoes. Ten or fifteen years of that and the deck looks tired long before the pool does.
A coating fixes that without tearing anything out. The existing concrete stays exactly where it is. It gets ground back to a clean, open surface, the cracks and the flaking spots get repaired, and then a decorative or textured coating goes down and gets sealed. What you end up with is a deck that is cooler underfoot, easier to grip when it is wet, and finished in a color you chose rather than the gray the builder poured.

What actually goes on top of the old concrete?
Preparation is most of the job. The slab gets ground or profiled so the surface is open and the coating can key into it, because anything laid over sealed or dusty concrete will let go later. Cracks get opened up and filled, spalled and flaking patches get cut back to sound concrete and rebuilt, and oil or rust marks get treated before they can bleed up through a new finish.
Then the system goes down in layers. A base coat bonds to the prepared slab, a decorative or textured layer gives the deck its color and its grip, and a sealed top coat goes over everything to lock it in. It is the same kind of work as the epoxy flooring Michael puts down indoors, built instead for a surface that sits in full sun and gets walked on wet all summer.
Will it stay cool enough for bare feet?
Color does most of that work. A light deck reflects the sun and stays noticeably cooler than a dark one, and in a valley where afternoons run past 110 degrees that difference is the whole point. Texture matters as well. A finish with a fine, broken surface holds less heat against your foot than a smooth, dense one, and it dries off faster once somebody climbs out of the water.
Grip is the other half of it. Wet feet on smooth concrete is how people go down, so the texture is built into the coating rather than polished flat out of it. It still sweeps clean and hoses off, and it is not so coarse that it chews up a towel or the soles of your feet.

Often it can, and it is a good way to make a small lot feel bigger. Decorative concrete gets tinted, flaked, scored or patterned, so the same material reads as tile in one spot and as stone in another. Stained concrete inside the house and a coated deck outside can be pulled toward the same color, so the eye carries straight through the slider instead of stopping at it.
It is all one trade. The deck, the patio and a flake coated garage floor are the same skill applied to different slabs. Michael does not touch tile, carpet or hardwood, and he does not lay pavers or resurface the pool itself. He coats concrete, which is why the finishes stay consistent from one surface to the next.
How long does a coated deck hold up?
Years, when it is prepared properly and sealed properly. Coatings fail out here for two reasons. Either the concrete was never opened up enough for anything to bond to, or the top coat was not rated for this much ultraviolet light. Hard desert UV will chalk and fade a product that was picked for a garage in a mild climate, and no amount of care afterwards brings that back.
So the prep is slow and the materials are chosen for the sun they have to live under. A sealed top coat also keeps sunscreen, leaf stain and hard water marks sitting on the surface where a hose can take them off, instead of letting them soak into open concrete and stay there. Seasonal owners get the same benefit: a sealed deck sits through a closed up summer without picking up much.

Can you coat a pool deck that is already cracked?
Usually yes. Hairline cracks get opened up and filled, and spalled or flaking areas get ground back to sound concrete before anything goes on. If the slab has moved badly, Michael will say so honestly.
Will the coated deck get too hot to walk on?

Do you resurface or repair the pool itself?
No. Michael coats the concrete deck and patio around the pool. The pool shell, the plaster and the tile are a different trade, so you would want a pool company for that part of the work.
How long does a pool deck coating take?
Most decks run a few days rather than a few weeks. Grinding and repairs come first, then the coating goes down in stages with cure time between them. Michael gives you the day by day plan up front.
Can the deck be finished in a pattern or a color?
Yes. Decorative concrete coatings get tinted, flaked or scored into patterns, so a plain gray slab can read as tile or stone. Samples go down so you see the finish in desert light first.
